Kirkland, Washington resident Debbie Newton says says she developed a ‘superbug’ infection after a treatment at Harborview Medical Center. She is now suing Olympus, who makes the duodenoscope that was used in her procedure. Harborview hospital says they don’t have any record of infections tied to the scope used. Newton claims she contracted a CRE (aka carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) superbug infection after a procedure in February of 2013.

This is another lawsuit against Olympus, who is now facing multiple cases against them tied to their duodenoscopes. The company has been marketing the use of these scopes in procedures without proper approval from the FDA. The company claims that they didn’t know FDA approval was required. They have recently been sued for wrongful death, product liability, fraud and negligence.
